Discussion:
Quicken 2004 Crashing
(too old to reply)

I've been running Quicken 2004 Premier, under Windows XP
Professional, since yesterday. I let Quicken convert my Quicken
2002 data.

It's been almost completely unusable, since it continually
crashes with the message "An error occurred during the last task
task. Please restart Quicken." Sometimes the error occurs as soon
as Quicken is started; sometimes it occurs a little later when I
first try to do something; sometimes I get to do one or two
things before it crashes.

Clearly, not everyone is having this problem. Does anyone have
any suggestion as to what might be wrong here, or what steps I
might take?

Just guessing here, Ken. Did you validate and super validate your
Q2002 data file before doing the conversion?

No, I didn't. However I did both after doing the conversion. I've
also uninstalled and reinstalled Quicken twice. The second time I
reinstalled, I first did chkdsk, defrag, and cleanmgr.

The problems persist, to the point of its being unusable.

Some more information: I started Quicken without a data file
(with the CTRL key held down) then created a file called test. I
played with the test file for a while, adding and deleting
transactions, and all appeared to work normally.

So it seems more likely that the problem is not with the Quicken
software, but with my data file. However I've validated and
super-validated once again and neither finds anything wrong. The
problem continues.

Is it worth going to the trouble of reinstalling Quicken 2002,
then validating and supervalidating before reinstalling Quicken
2004 and reconverting the file? Is there any likelihood of that
working?

I think it is at least possible that a problem in an older
version file could get converted to a problem in a newer version
file that would not be detected/corrected by validating the
newer version file.

To see whether the problem is in the data, you could create a
"new" Q data file and open that; run some tests with it, trying
to do the same things you were trying with your converted data.
If you have no trouble with a new file, sounds like the problem
is in your data. Then you could try having Q2002 validate your
old version data (you could also do a Quicken copy here), then
let 2004 convert.

If validating/super-validating/copying before conversion does
not cure the problem; you could try a sort of blunderbuss
approach to narrowing down the data problem, by renaming files
in the Quicken fileset, one by one - close Quicken, rename a
file, then start Quicken again .

Rename QDATA.QPH to see if the problem is in your price history.
Rename QDATA.QTX to see if the problem is in your tax planning
data
Rename QDATA.QEL to see if the problem is in your online
services data
Rename QDATA.QSD to see if the problem is in your custom icons,
Financial Calendar notes, extra
account information, and information about your loans

Quicken will recreate those any of those files when it starts
and if you can successfully process after deleting one of those
files, that will at least tell you where the corruption is. You
will have to decide whether you want to recreate the information
that is lost by the process.

If that doesn't do it, maybe you have to export 2002 to QIF and
have 2004 import from there.

That seems to have been the case. I just went through the
laborious process of uninstalling QW2004, reinstalling QW2002,
reloading the data, and validating and super-validating it. This
time validation (but not super-validation) *did* find an error. I
then uninstalled 2002, reinstalled 2004, and reloaded the
validated data.

It's too soon to tell for sure, but everything now appears to be
working correctly.

Thanks to you and speedlever.

I am running Quicken 2004 Premier on Windows 2000 professional. Updated
from 2003, which ran perfectly. It has been disaster since. Keeps
crashing, same error messages as others. Often wont re-open. Have done
everything, even got new disk. Defrag, validate, super validate, uninstall,
reinstall, blah, blah, blah... Spoke with customer support 3 times, and
finally they gave up and told me to start all over with a new file. I am a
10 year "super-user", with multiple credit, brokerage, bank and liability
accounts, all enabled for on-line. It will be a total disaster to start
over. Do not know what I am going to do. I hate the thought of going to
Money. In all likelihood, I will try and return to 2003.

As a side note, support told me to start over with a new file, that my data
was corrupt (although it worked perfect in 2003 - say conversion issue?). I
opened a new file with no data and it crashed. You do the math. I doubt it
is my data, but a buggy program which they deny staunchly ("I am the only
one having problems"). This thread says differently.

Please respond to group.

Oh the pain.....

Did you see my most recent message in the thread? My problems
were corrected by returning to the earlier version, validating
and supervalidating there, then reinstalling QW2004.

Yes. I put back QW2002, restored the old data file, validated and
super-validated there (validate found a single problem;
super-validate found nothing). Then I reinstalled QW2004, and
it's been trouble-free ever since.

Well, I reloaded QW2003 validated and supervalidated without any
errors. Reloaded QW2004 and had the same memory errors and "Quicken
has encountered an error, please close...". I found a tech support
bulletin that if you convert from a previous version to QW2004 and
have a Net Worth graph that is configured for more than 12 months on a
custom page the app may crash. I had such a graph. I deleted the
graph/report and have been error free! What a relief......

You may have seen my later message. It started crashing again.

I think I had such a graph, but I not going to put 2004 back to
find out. I just don't have the time for that kind of
experimentation.

Can't blame you, but for what it's worth, there's no charge for
Intuit's phone support for "Data conversion from prior versions of

Thanks, but I'm done. I've invested the better part of eight
hours fooling around with this. I liked 2004, thought it was
marginally better than 2002, but nothing earthshaking. It's just
not worth any more time.

I still have the CD. When Intuit comes out with an update to do
it, I might try it again. But not before.
